Florida Keys History: Research of Gail Swanson

Black History

I am interested in all forgotten people at the Keys - be they impressed sailors on British warships or enslaved people or native people. Of course, the most forgotten of all are the Indian people of the Keys (now extinct) and the Africans and enslaved African-Americans. Their stories need to be told.

While studying British warship history I found the story of a laden slave ship wrecked off Key Largo, and, a little later, records of a forgotten African cemetery at Key West. I will be writing books on these events, and have written a book on the Indian people, which is currently at the publishers. It is entitled "Documentation of the Indians of the Florida Keys and of Biscayne Bay 1513-1765".

The following work is available here in PDF format. You must have Adobe Acrobat Reader software installed on your computer in order to view these documents. Acrobat Reader is free and is available for download here.
