Florida Keys History: Research of Gail Swanson

Key Vaca & Marathon

The Spanish called the Middle Keys, my home for 22 years, the Cayos de Bacas, the Key of Cows, since at least 1656. The area is now known by the name of "Marathon", a name related to the railroad built on the Keys in the early 1900s. Some years ago real estate promoters tried to get a new place name for the area, "Marathon Key". I thought it disgraceful that the ancient name of Key Vaca, the anglicized version of Cayos de Bacas, would be essentially eliminated by this new, phoney "Key", and began researching the use of the name of Key Vaca through the two and a half centuries before 1900. It has lead to a very interesting history of a tiny spot on this earth. This file will eventually have my Chronology of events at Key Vaca to 1900.
